Jordan Spieth can become number one in the world ranking this week. Only seventeen men have ever held that coveted position, and four of them have been Americans. To overtake Rory McIlroy at the top of the world rankings, Spieth only needs to win the British Open at St Andrews this week.
The world golf ranking has been in existence since 1986, and in these almost three decades one figure has undoubtedly dominated: Tiger Woods. Rory McIlroy has held the top spot since last season’s Bridgestone.
“I’ve certainly played solid enough to be No. 1 in the world,” Spieth said. “It’s a tough situation this year given Rory’s success, but you just have to keep working as hard as I am, focus week in and week out and have a good end to the season because there are a lot of world ranking points in all the tournaments ahead.”
The great golf event of the year in Europe, the third stage of the Grand Slam, has four Spaniards in play: Pablo Larrázabal, winner of the BMW International, Sergio García, Rafael Cabrera-Bello and Miguel Ángel Jiménez.
