Anton Karlsson has won the Gecko Pro Tour that ended today at the Malaga course of El Parador. The Swedish player thus breaks the pitcher, after going to the source several times this season on the Costa del Sol circuit.
The lanky young blond golfer won the tournament, but ran out of nails. He went out in the second match of the day, took the lead in the clubhouse and had to wait almost two hours until the last match to be able to claim victory. And that’s not just a figure of speech, for in the last matches was Simon Ward, who with an extraordinary eagle on the 17th hole moved to within one stroke of Karlsson. With a birdie on the demanding 18th hole of El Parador he would have forced the playoff, however he finished with a bogey and the triumph flew to Nordic lands.
Karlsson takes the win in a strange tournament at the Gecko, where the weather conditions became an unpleasant enemy. The second round had to be cancelled due to fog, so it was decided to cancel the first day and the title would be played on the last day at El Parador. It was not a simple decision, but the rules of the circuit were followed. The fifteen best and tied players of the first day played the last round in Torrequebrada and El Parador.
Thus, Karlsson won with a round of 68 strokes. One stroke behind was Jacobo Pastor from Madrid, and two strokes behind was Simon Ward, author of the best round on the first day, and Gonzalo Gancedo. With this victory, the Swedish player still aspires to win the second part of the Gecko Order of Merit, that is to say, the stretch of tournaments from January to March.
The next meeting of The Gecko Pro Tour will take place next week, from March 10 to 12, at the Baviera and Añoreta Golf courses.
