McIlroy, on the eve of the US Open: “I think I’m the best in the world”.

He is not modest, nor does he need to be. Rory McIlroy is at the top of the podium of world golf, and that position is not just a gift, but the result of hard work and outstanding results. The Northern Irish player, in a meeting with the press in the run-up to the second major of the season, the U.S. Open at Chambers Bay, has shown great confidence in his current form and in his chances for the tournament.

At 26 years old and with four majors on his resume, McIlroy has said unabashedly that “I think I’m the best player in the world, and obviously I want to go out there every week and try to prove it.”

The European golfer was asked about basketball star LeBron James and said: “If you look at the numbers, you can clearly see that he is the best player in the world. And I guess it’s the same with me, I feel the same way when I look at the world rankings and see my name at the top. If you look back over the last four or five years, it seems to me that I’ve won more majors than anyone else in that period.”

Starting tomorrow, when the US Open begins to roll, McIlroy will have the opportunity to prove that his world leadership is not the result of chance. Of course, he will have to deal with the best rivals on the planet, especially with the world number two, the American Jordan Spieth, winner of the last Masters at Augusta.
